We have compiled a small amount of information that will hopefully help you to understand better what the difference is, and why you should choose an MPPT or a PWM type Solar Controller for your system.
A solar charge controller is needed in virtually all solar power systems that utilise batteries. The job of the solar charge controller is to regulate the power going from the solar panels to the batteries. Overcharging batteries will at the least significantly reduce battery life and at worst damage the batteries to the point that they are unusable.
The most basic charge controller simply monitors the battery voltage and opens the circuit, stopping the charging, when the battery voltage rises to a certain level. Older charge controllers used a mechanical relay to open or close the circuit, stopping or starting power going to the batteries.
More modern charge controllers use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to slowly lower the amount of power applied to the batteries as the batteries get closer and closer to fully charged. This type of controller allows the batteries to be more fully charged with less stress on the battery, extending battery life. It can also keep batteries in a fully charged state (called “float”) indefinitely. PWM is more complex, but does not have any mechanical connections to break.
The most recent and best type of solar charge controller is called Maximum Power Point Tracking or MPPT.
MPPT controllers are basically able to convert excess voltage into amperage. This has advantages in a couple of different areas.
Most solar power systems use 12 volt batteries, like you find in cars. (Some use other voltages and the same advantages apply to these systems as well.) Solar panels can deliver far more voltage than is required to charge the batteries. For in essence, converting the excess voltage into amps, the charge voltage can be kept at an optimal level while the time required to fully charge the batteries is reduced. This allows the solar power system to operate optimally at all times.
Another area that is enhanced by an MPPT charge controller is power loss. Lower voltage in the wires running from the solar panels to the charge controller results in higher energy loss in the wires than higher voltage. With a PWM charge controller used with 12v batteries, the voltage from the solar panel to the charge
typically has to be 18v. Using an MPPT controller allows much higher voltages in the cables from the panels to the solar charge controller. The MPPT controller then converts the excess voltage into additional amps. By running higher voltage in the cables from the solar panels to the charge controller, power loss in the cable is reduced significantly.
When using high voltage “Grid Connect” panels with VOC voltages above 35v to charge a 12v battery bank, the only controller option is an MPPT charge controller.
The final function of modern solar charge controllers is preventing reverse-current flow. At night, when solar panels are not generating electricity, electricity can actually flow backwards from the batteries through the solar panels, draining the batteries. You’ve worked hard all day using solar power to charge the batteries; you don’t want to waste all that power! The charge controller can detect when no energy is coming from the solar panels and open the circuit, disconnecting the solar panels from the batteries and stopping reverse current flow.
When assessing which type of solar charge controller to purchase, you need to know about their functionality and features but it’s also helpful to see a straightforward comparison of your options. A battery is a vital part of an inverter. The performance of an inverter largely depends on its battery. Regular care and maintenance of batteries keep them in good shape for a longer time period.
There are several reasons behind the failure of inverter batteries earlier than expected.
Life span of a battery is very much dependent upon how much it is used. Batteries wear out faster when used too much. Inverter utilizes the energy stored in batteries and supplies current to the electrical and electronic devices to keep them running during power cut. The more load or devices you use during power failure, more power will be sucked out of batteries and they will wear out faster.
Poor quality battery charger
An inverter unit has 3 components: a charger, a battery and an inverter. The charger is connected to the power supply and it charges the battery when the electricity is coming from the utility. A poor quality charger can destroy the battery faster than anything else. Use good quality chargers to increase life of battery.
Overcharging leads to corrosion of battery plates which eventually results in premature battery failure. If your battery is getting too hot, it is an indication that it is getting overcharged. Overcharging a rechargeable battery leads to its early than expected failure.
Deep discharging the battery
Deep discharging is not good for the health of any rechargeable battery. For example deep-cycle batteries like a lead-acid batteries are designed to be regularly deeply discharged using most of its capacity. A battery looses its efficiency and capacity when it is subjected to deep discharge.
Lack of regular maintenance
Poor maintenance is a major reason behind battery damage. Rust, corrosion and dryness are biggest enemies of your inverter battery. Rusting in terminals reduces the current flow to and from the battery. This restricted flow of current results in slow battery charging which ultimately reduces battery life. Batteries also require regular topping up with distilled water and cleaning. If top-up is not done than battery plates get dried. Dry batteries cannot be saved from failure.
It is very important to inspect inverter batteries regularly for any damage and fault. Sometimes the electrolyte leaks through cracks developed in battery. Due to lack of electrolyte the batteries fail so always carry out preventive maintenance on your batteries to avoid corrective maintenance.
This method may not bring the battery to full performance of the original condition but at my rate the battery will work for 50%~70% of it's initial value.

we need in this step to fill the battery with Distilled water to activate the acid again
so refill it by syringe few time until the water come out from all holes and measure the voltage

STEP 3: MIX D WATER WITH ACID WHILE CHARGING
after filling the battery with the water we need to make sure it's mixed with dried acid inside the battery to reactivate it again
so first we will charge it with 12 volts DC "i'm using normal 12v charger" output is 16Amps
u can use any charger 12V in maximum 9V in minimum
ok now wait 5min until u see bubbles come out from the holes.
if no bubbles come from any of 3 holes u have to reverse negative and positive and wait 1~3min At Maximum (it's Dangerous step don't leave the battery in this condition alone)
now u must see bubbles come out from holes too fast like boiling cut off the power immediately and reconnect negative and positive right again
now pull the wasted water from the top of 3 holes by the syringe and let the battery charging
Don't cover holes until it charge to 6.9V u should check it every 1 hour
then dry it out by tissue and cover every thing and continue charging properly.
Solar inverters are alternatives to power generators they are not quite as versatile.
The first challenge for a power inverter is that you need to charge the batteries.
You need electricity to charge the battery of your power inverter and if you live in a country like Nigeria where public power supply is not steady you may not get enough public power supply to charge your battery, which could result in poor performance of the inverter or inability to use the inverter at all.
The ideal person to buy a power inverter is someone who has at least 12 hours of public power supply per day or someone who already has a power generator , but wants a noise free alternative.
For example, I use my power generator during the day (if power supply becomes epileptic, though thankfully in the past couple of weeks power supply have been stable in my area so my generator have been resting for weeks now, though I still warm it up every 10 days) and use my power inverter at night because they operate at low noise and are night-friendly. The generator also charges the inverter battery while it is on.
Now that power has stabilised (up to 15 hours per day) in my area I now use just the power inverter to meet the shortfall in supply.
However, if you are in an area with less than 12 hours of public power supply, it will not make a lot of sense to buy an inverter, except you also have a power generator or you are wiling to invest in a solar power system with solar panels.
It is also important to note that a power inverter is more suited for resistive loads like your household and office electronics like TVs, Computers, Printers, lights, etc.
Power Inverters are not best with inductive loads, so if you are going to be operating lots of machines with motors in them, a generator may be better, except you can find an industrial grade inverter.
Inductive loads like Refrigerators, Freezers, and Air conditioners can be powered by an inverter, just make sure you buy an inverter with high enough capacity and capable of handling their high start currents.
For example, the starting current of a refrigerator could be up to 3 times its current in normal operation. S0, a 200w refrigerator requires up to 600w to start. A/Cs are even worse.

Your Power Needs
Once you are sure you need to buy an inverter, the next stage is to calculate your power needs. Simply note the gadgets that you will be operating with the power inverter.
For example, typical load may be 1 TV set, 1 decoder, 1 DVD player, 1 Fan, 1 Laptop, 3 light points.
Then note the power ratings of each of the gadgets. You can find the power rating on the back or side of the gadget. You can also check the manual of the gadget. For example for the load above, the rating could be:
1 TV set (100w)
1 Decoder (20w)
1 DVD Player (20w)
1 Electric Fan (70w)
1 Laptop (20w)
3 energy efficient light points (90w)
Total Load = 320w
The next step is to get a VA equivalent of the power, which if we assume a power factor of 0.8 gives 400 VA (i.e. 320/0.8)
After calculating your total load, the next step is to derate the power inverter to create some allowance for flexibility and to ensure it does not over work itself.
To derate, just multiply your total load by 2. In the example above 2 x 400 = 800VA. So, you will buy an inverter with a power rating of 800VA or higher like an 800VA Inverter.
You may also decide to multiply by 3 to give more operation allowance for the Power inverter. Note that the aim of derating is to ensure that your inverter does not operate at full-load or near full-load, which will ensure the longevity of the device.
Type of Battery
You don’t just buy an inverter, you also need to buy an inverter battery as that is where the power inverter derives its energy.
The best battery for your inverter is the SMF deep cycle inverter battery. SMF stands for Sealed, Maintenance Free. Though you can use the normal car battery, but they emit poisonous fumes which could have long term impact on your health. This means an SMF battery can be installed indoors making them very convenient.
Another type of battery to use if you do not mind some maintenance is the tubular battery, which are also deep cycle batteries, but require some maintenance.
They require less maintenance compared to car batteries. Tubular batteries are not advisable for installation indoors as they are not completely sealed and could be emitting gases.
deep cycle batteries last longer than regular car batteries because they are optimised for the loading characteristics of power inverters.
They may cost more, but we recommend you buy an SMF deep cycle battery for your power inverter. If you are looking for cost effectiveness and do not mind some maintenance, go the tubular deep cycle battery.
Number of Batteries Required
An inverter is usually rated in this pattern X VA/Y V, where X is the rated power output and Y is the input voltage required.
For example an 800 VA/12 V inverter will give output power of up to 800 VA and require an input voltage of 12V. Similarly, a 1.5 KVA/24V inverter will output 1.5 KVA (1500 VA) and require 24V input.
Since batteries usually come in 12 volts voltage, the 800 VA/12 V will require a minimum of one 12V batteries, while the 1.5KVA/24V inverter will require a minimum of two 12V batteries connected in series.
In the same vein, a 3.5KVA/48V inverter will need a minimum of four 12V batteries. When you buy an inverter, make sure you know the minimum number of battery required.
What Battery Capacity
Batteries come in different capacities. The higher the capacity, the longer a battery can last before getting discharged, given similar loading.
A 200 Ah (Ampere-Hour) battery is recommended though a 100 Ah or 150 Ah battery can be managed.
For example, for our example load above (400VA), a fully charged 200 Ah battery can theoretically deliver 6 hours of power while a fully charged 100 Ah battery can only manage 3 hours.
Note that these are theoretical values, actual values may be less (as we ignored inverter efficiency and our power factor is assumed).
To increase the capacity and use time, you connect more batteries in parallel or reduce the load on the inverter.
For example, connecting two 200 Ah batteries in parallel will result in a theoretical energy capacity of 400 Ah and increase the theoretical use time to 12 hours. Note that to connect batteries in parallel you must account for the input voltage.
So, a 12V input inverter will require one 12V battery in each parallel set, a 24V input inverter will require two 12V batteries in each parallel set, a 48v input inverter will require four 12V batteries in each parallel set and so on.
Hence, a 48v input inverter will require eight 12v batteries for 2 parallel sets and twelve 12V batteries for 3 parallel sets.

Power Inverters are available in 3 basic designs, two of which I remember very well now – the one that out sinusoidal waves and those that are modified sign wave type (meaning not pure sine waves and do have limits when it comes to its application) . The power inverter converts your storage battery power into the 240 volts AC that runs your appliances. It is the heart of your solar energy system. Unless you only run 12 volt DC appliances you will need a power inverter to supply your AC. This is just the basics.
The Charge Controller
A Charge Controller is necessary to protect the batteries from over charging and supply them with the proper amount of energy to promote long battery life.
Without Storage Batteries to store energy you would only have power when the sun was shining. There is a lot more to batteries than just the ordinary car battery. Yo may need to change batteries over the years.
Wires and Cables
Without the right size of cables, you are likely to experience inefficient transfer of power (greater losses) and overheating.
This is required to monitor the performance of your solar system.
Firstly, it is very necessary to know what gadgets you will be using (eg.tv, sat. receiver) and how long you will use how long you would have them on the solar power and how much energy your battery can store and which solar panel (rating in power) will supply the required energy.
A lot goes into calculating the cost of setting up a solar system. First one has to consider the period of usable sunlight available at their location to do this calculation. For us here close to the equator, we get about 7 to 8 hours or more of sunlight during dry season, just a rough estimate.
How do I know I need 100w or 80w or 300 watts solar panel for my project?
The power consumption of appliances is given in Watts. To calculate the energy you will use over time, just multiply the power consumption by the hours of use.
Eg. If I have 90W tv set which I want to use for 6hrs, 25W satellite receiver for the same period, and a 50W fan for 3 hours. What will be the energy required from the solar panels for the period?
1. the energy for each appliance is Watts x time (hours) = Wh
So, the watt hours for the tv = 90 x 6 = 540 Wh (watt hours)
Watt hours for sat. receiver = 25 x 6 = 150 Wh
Watt hours for fan will be = 50 x 3 = 150 Wh
2. sum the watt hours for the individual appliances ie. 540 + 150 + 150 = 840 Wh (watt hours)
This means that the solar panel will need to supply 840 watt hours of energy to the battery each day to cover the total power required by these appliances.
3. since there are bound to be losses in the system However, to account for natural losses, we multiply the result by 1.2 (this factor allows for natural system losses, assuming 85% efficiency). Therefore, we will assume the panels will actually need to be able to supply a total of
840 x 1.2 = 1008Wh
4. so, to supply 1008Wh of energy the panel we assume to receive 7 hours of sunlight will be rated at 1008 Wh / 7 h = 144W
So, I will need 144W solar panel to supply energy to my appliances above at the given time.
Regarding point 3, it also means, if I have a solar panel rated at 100W receiving sunlight for 7 hours a day, the total energy supplied considering 85% efficiency will be 100x7x0.85= 595Wh and not 700Wh so always compensate by adding extra 15% of total power for maximum efficiency.
5. Your battery should be able to store 1008Wh of energy. Since batteries capacities are rated in Ah (Ampere Hours) you need to multiply Ah by the Volt rating to know the Watt Hour. Power(W) = Voltage (V) x Current (I) ; Watt hour = VxIxHour
Therefore Ah (which is I x h) = Wh / V = 1008 / 12 (the number 12 represents a 12v battery)
= 84 Ah
So it means you will need not less than a 84Ah, 12V battery (deep-cycle batteries, not ordinary car batteries) to do the job.
NB. Another way of calculating battery capacity is explained in this example. Should my battery be rated at 84Ah, 12V the watt hour (energy) will be 84Ah x 12 V = 1008Ah
It implies that the battery can supply a 150watt appliance for 1008/70 = 14hours
